Description The Deputy County Attorneys, along with the County Attorney, provide legal services to the County and its departments, including but not limited to, the preparation of legal documents, court filings, and representation of the County in court and administrative proceedings.
Deputy County Attorneys also provide legal advice to County officials and staff on various matters.
Examples of Duties The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.
Act as back-up to the County Attorney in all aspects.
Prepare and present legal training for County employees and officials.
Represent Gaston County in both State and Federal Court.
Conduct legal research, draft, and review legal documents, including contracts, ordinances, and resolutions.
Draft and review real estate documents, including but not limited to, leases, easements, and deeds.
Work with law enforcement agencies and other county departments to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
Represent the county in legal proceedings and negotiations, including but not limited to civil litigation, tax appeals, and administrative hearings.
Other duties as may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
Minimum of three (3) years of legal experience required, five (5) or more preferred.
Must have strong analytical and research skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong commitment to public service and must be able to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
A background in real estate preferred.
Applicant must have a license to practice law in the State of North Carolina.
(Admission to practice in the WDNC is strongly preferred).
Additional Information Salary is commensurate with experience, up to $215,000 annually.
The applicant selected must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
