low-income persons in Charlote and Western North Carolina, seeks a dynamic individual for the role of
Managing Atorney, Community Empowerment Project to support the Advocacy Center’s programs.

ROLE: The Managing Atorney, Community Empowerment Project is responsible for overseeing and coordina�ng the provision of legal services to individuals or organiza�ons in need, ensuring the highest quality of client representa�on in all areas of Community Economic Development, including but not limited to expunc�ons, drivers’ license restora�on, property tax educa�on and assistance, and other re-entry areas.
The Managing Atorney works closely with the Pro Bono Department to organize, train and work with volunteer atorneys to assist with re-entry work.
The Managing Atorney for the Community Empowerment Project ensures that vulnerable individuals and organiza�ons receive essen�al legal assistance and that cases are effec�vely assigned and handled.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: o Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains staff for the Community Empowerment Project in conjunc�on with the Chief of Legal Affairs.
o Supervision of a paralegal, atorney and, occasionally, an intern or fellow.
o Conduct regular check-ins, case reviews, performance valua�ons, and feedback sessions.
o Manage resources, budgets, and grant applica�on to support Community Empowerment ini�a�ves.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Expunc�ons o Read criminal records to determine client eligibility for North Carolina expunc�ons, cer�ficates of relief, and mo�ons for appropriate relief.
o Dra� and file pe��ons for expunc�on of client criminal records o Appear in district or superior court as need to get expunc�on and cer�ficate of relief pe��ons signed.
Driver’s License Restora�on: o Read driving records and advice leters to determine eligibility for reinstatement of North Carolina driver’s license.
o Nego�ate with assistant district atorneys (ADA) in relevant coun�es regarding failures to appear and failures to pay.
o Appear in court to act on the nego�ated terms of the nego�a�ons with the ADA and to move for mo�ons to remit court costs and fees associated with failures to pay.
o Interview clients to fill out mo�ons to remit court costs and fees and witnesses for DMV hearings.
o Prepare for and atend DMV hearings Property Tax Relief: o Give presenta�ons on property tax relief exemp�ons offered by the state of North Carolina.
o Coordinate and collaborate with the county assessor’s office in obtaining client informa�on regarding their property.
o Assess clients for eligibility for property tax exemp�ons over the telephone and in person.
o Conduct virtual and in-person clinics to assist clients in filling out property tax exemp�on applica�ons and preparing suppor�ng documenta�on.
Community Outreach, Community Presenta�ons, Training & Collabora�on: o Collaborate with community and non-profit stakeholders to iden�fy legal needs and develop pro bono opportuni�es and to support individual casework assigned to pro bono atorneys.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS: o Juris Doctor (JD) degree and ac�ve membership in the NC state bar.
o Several years of legal prac�ce experience, with a strong background in relevant areas of law.
o Experience managing legal teams or projects.
o Commitment to and passion for pro bono and public interest work.
o Strong communica�on, leadership, and organiza�onal skills.
o Ability to collaborate and build rela�onships with diverse stakeholders.
o Proficiency in legal research, analysis, and wri�ng.
o Knowledge of relevant laws and regula�ons affec�ng underserved communi�es.
o Excellent �me management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
o Strong analy�cal and problem-solving skills.
o Ability to priori�ze tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
o Proficient with Microso� Office Suite or related so�ware.
WORK SCHEDULE: Charlote Center for Legal Advocacy supports a hybrid work schedule with core work hours, Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
SALARY: This posi�on is a full-�me salary, exempt posi�on.
The annual salary range begins at $69,600.
00 and may vary depending upon experience and skills.
