The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences (https://geoearth.
charlotte.
edu/) is a diverse community of physical, geospatial, and social scientists composed of over 35 faculty members, 400 undergraduate majors, and 60 graduate students.
Our current mission is to inspire discovery of the Earth and its inhabitants with a vision for an informed and diverse community that strives for a sustainable Earth and an equitable world.
We create and disseminate knowledge of the Earth’s human and natural systems to adapt to an everchanging environment in which we live, work, and interact.
The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Meteorology (BS), Earth and Environmental Sciences (BS), Geology (BS), Geography (BA/BS), and Environmental Studies (BA).
At the graduate level, we offer an MS in Earth Sciences, an MA and PhD in Geography, and regularly participate in the interdisciplinary Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (INES) and Public Policy (PPOL) PhD programs.
The Department is also home to the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science (CAGIS, https://gis.

edu/) and the Charlotte Action Research Project (CHARP, https://charp.
charlotte.
edu/).

The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is housed within the newly established College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences (CHESS), which includes 15 departments, 18 interdisciplinary programs, and 6 applied centers.

Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.

This position will begin on August 15, 2024.
Qualifications.
The Department is seeking expertise that leverages remote sensing to address questions related to topics such as precipitation, cloud cover, aerosols, air pollution, or radiative transfer, and their interactions with Earth’s climate and weather systems.
Candidates are required to have earned a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment.
Preferred candidates will be those who: (1) Provide evidence of scholarly productivity or potential, describe plans to develop a sustainable externally-funded (e.
g.
NASA, NOAA, NSF) research program, and describe how their research will incorporate both graduate and undergraduate students; and (2) Demonstrate the ability and desire to contribute to the Department’s interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate teaching.
Contributions include developing new graduate and/or undergraduate courses in Meteorology and/or Earth Sciences, as well as supporting existing undergraduate courses in either of those subjects.
Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage students of different ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities, and abilities, helping to remove barriers in order to ensure the success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.
